Professional Rain Gutter Replacement for Homes and Businesses

When we replace gutters, we don’t automatically put the new ones exactly where the old ones were.

There’s usually a reason the old gutters aren’t working.

Sometimes they’re just worn out. But other times, the gutters were too small, didn’t have enough downspouts, or weren’t sloped correctly when they were installed.

We’ve also seen gutters that look fine from the ground but aren’t draining the way they should.

We’ll check the existing setup before deciding what needs to change. That includes looking at the roofline, the condition of the fascia, where the downspouts are located, and where the water ends up when it rains.

If we’re replacing the gutters, we might as well fix any problems with the original layout while we’re at it.

Signs It’s Time to Replace Your Rain Gutters

You don’t have to wait until your gutters fall off the house to replace them.

Here are a few things to look for:

  • Gutters hanging loose or pulling away from the fascia.
  • Water pouring over the sides during a rainstorm.
  • Leaks that keep coming back.
  • Rusted, cracked, or badly bent gutters.
  • Water sitting in the gutters instead of draining.
  • Gutters damaged by snow or falling branches.
  • Water collecting around the house.
  • Multiple sections that have already been repaired.

One leaking corner isn’t a reason to replace every gutter on the house.

But if you’re dealing with several of these problems, it’s worth getting an estimate.

And if your gutters overflow even when they’re clean, they may be too small for the amount of water coming off your roof.

Gutter Repair vs. Replacement: Which Makes More Sense?

This really comes down to the condition of your existing gutters.

If a hanger came loose or there’s a leak at one corner, we can often repair it.

If the gutters are bent, rusted out, pulling away in several places, or have been patched repeatedly, replacing them may make more sense.

Snow damage is another one. Sometimes a section can be fixed, but if the gutter has been twisted or pulled away from the fascia, there may be more damage than you can see from the ground.

We’d rather tell you what actually needs to be done than sell you a whole new system when a repair would work.

Seamless Gutter Replacement Options

If you’re replacing your gutters, we usually recommend going with seamless.

Older sectional gutters have joints every few feet. Those joints can start leaking as the gutters age.

With seamless gutters, we form the gutter to fit the length of your roofline. There are still connections at corners and outlets, but you don’t have all those seams running along the straight sections.

We install aluminum, steel, and copper gutters.

Aluminum Gutter Replacement

Aluminum is what we use for most residential jobs.

It’s lightweight, doesn’t rust, and comes in a good variety of colors. You can usually find something that works with your siding, trim, or roof.

For most homeowners, aluminum is a practical choice without the added cost of copper.

Steel and Copper Gutter Options

We also install steel and copper gutters.

Steel is an option for projects where additional material strength is needed, although the finish and exposure to moisture still matter.

Copper is more expensive, but it looks great on certain homes, especially cabins and custom-built houses. Over time, it develops a natural patina.

If you’re considering something other than aluminum, we can go over the differences.

Why We Recommend 6-Inch Gutters for Many Homes

We install both 5-inch and 6-inch seamless gutters, but 6-inch OG K-style gutters are our specialty.

A lot of homes have 5-inch gutters. They can work perfectly well on smaller roof areas, but they’re not always enough for larger roofs or heavy runoff.

Six-inch gutters hold and carry more water than comparable 5-inch gutters.

That extra capacity can make a difference when it’s raining hard.

We also like the way the 6-inch K-style looks on a house. It has a nice profile without looking oversized on most rooflines.

That doesn’t mean everybody needs 6-inch gutters.

We’ll look at your roof size, pitch, and downspout locations before recommending one over the other.

Gutter and Downspout Replacement

One thing people sometimes overlook is the downspouts.

Your gutters can be in great shape, but if the water can’t get out fast enough, they’ll still overflow.

When we’re replacing gutters, we check the downspouts too.

We commonly use 2-by-3-inch downspouts, but larger sizes are available when a roof needs more drainage.

Sometimes an existing downspout can stay. Sometimes it needs to be moved, or another one needs to be added.

We also look at where the water comes out.

You don’t want a downspout dumping water against your foundation, onto a walkway, or somewhere that’s going to cause problems every winter.

Gutter Replacement Cost: What Affects the Price?

It’s hard to give someone an accurate gutter replacement price without knowing what the house looks like.

Two homes can have the same amount of gutter but be completely different jobs.

A single-story ranch house with straight gutter runs is pretty simple compared to a tall home with several rooflines, tight corners, and difficult access.

Here’s what affects the cost:

  • Total feet of gutter.
  • 5-inch or 6-inch gutter size.
  • Aluminum, steel, or copper.
  • Number of corners and downspouts.
  • Height of the building.
  • Removing and hauling away the old gutters.
  • Condition of the fascia.
  • Gutter covers or snow brakes.
  • Special installation requirements for heavy snow.

If you have old gutters that need to come down, we’ll account for that in the estimate.

We can also price different options if you’re trying to decide between materials or gutter sizes.

Replacing Gutters in Northern California’s Rain and Snow

The weather makes a big difference in how we approach a gutter job.

A house in Redding doesn’t deal with the same conditions as a cabin in Truckee.

Around Redding, Shasta Lake, and Palo Cedro, we pay close attention to how much water comes off the roof during heavy rain. Gutter size and downspout placement are important.

In Mount Shasta, Weed, Dunsmuir, Truckee, and Lake Tahoe, snow is a major consideration.

If you have a metal roof, you’ve probably seen what happens when a big sheet of snow lets go.

That snow can come down with enough force to bend gutters or tear them right off the fascia.

For homes with heavy snow exposure, we look at the roof pitch, roofing material, gutter attachment, and whether snow brakes should be installed.

We also offer heavy snow-load gutter installation options with closer hanger spacing where appropriate.

One thing we always want homeowners to understand is that gutters aren’t snow stops.

Even a well-installed gutter can be damaged by a large amount of sliding snow. That’s why snow retention is something we take seriously on mountain homes.

Our Gutter Replacement Process

We start by looking at the existing gutters and finding out what problems you’ve been having.

If they’re leaking, we want to know where. If they’re overflowing, we’ll look at the gutter size and downspouts. If snow damaged them, we’ll check how they were mounted and what’s happening above them on the roof.

Then we’ll go over your options.

You’ll be able to choose the gutter color and material, and we’ll recommend a size based on your roof.

When it’s time for installation, we’ll remove the old gutters as needed, check the fascia, and install the new seamless gutters.

We pay attention to the slope, hangers, corners, and downspouts. We also want the gutters to sit nicely against the fascia and look clean when the job is finished.

Residential and Commercial Gutter Replacement

We work on all kinds of buildings.

Some jobs are just a few gutter runs on a house. Others involve garages, shops, outbuildings, or larger commercial properties.

A bigger roof can mean a lot more water to handle, so the gutter and downspout layout becomes especially important.

We also replace gutters on cabins and mountain properties where snow can be hard on the existing system.

Whether it’s a small replacement or a larger project, we’ll look at what the building needs before putting together an estimate.

Protecting New Gutters From Debris

If your house is surrounded by pine trees, you already know how quickly gutters can fill up.

Pine needles seem to find their way into everything.

When you’re replacing gutters, it’s a good time to consider adding covers.

We offer gutter covers and guards that can help keep leaves, needles, and other debris out.

They can cut down on cleaning, but they don’t mean you’ll never have to maintain your gutters again.

Some properties benefit more from covers than others. It depends on the trees, the roof, and the type of debris you’re dealing with.

Frequently Asked Questions About Gutter Replacement

How do I know if my gutters need to be replaced?

Look for sagging, leaks in multiple places, rust, bent sections, or gutters pulling away from the house. If they’re overflowing even after being cleaned, that can also be a sign the system isn’t sized correctly.

Is it better to repair or replace leaking gutters?

If it’s one leaking corner or a loose hanger, repairing it may be enough. If you’re dealing with leaks throughout the system or the gutters are badly damaged, replacement is usually worth considering.

How much does gutter replacement cost in Northern California?

It depends on how much gutter you need, the material, the height of your house, and how complicated the installation is. Removing old gutters, adding downspouts, and installing snow brakes can also affect the price. We can give you an estimate based on your home.

Are 6-inch gutters better than 5-inch gutters?

Six-inch gutters can carry more water, which is helpful on larger roofs and during heavy rain. We install a lot of 6-inch K-style gutters, but 5-inch gutters still work well on certain homes.

Can I replace gutters without replacing my roof?

Yes. You can usually replace the gutters without replacing the roof. If the fascia is rotten or there’s damage along the roof edge, that may need to be fixed first.

Should downspouts be replaced with the gutters?

Not always. If your downspouts are in good shape and drain properly, they may be reusable. If they’re too small, damaged, or in the wrong place, we’ll recommend changing them.

What type of gutters are best for homes with heavy snow?

We often recommend 6-inch seamless gutters for mountain homes, along with installation methods suited to the roof and snow conditions. Snow brakes may also be needed, especially on metal roofs where snow can slide off in large sections.
